Bahamas Weather
The Bahamas boast 310 days of sunshine with an average of 8 hours of sun per day and the tropical maritime climate conditions prevent extreme temperature fluctuations. The islands cross over two climate zones, sub-tropics and tropics, so keep in mind that there can be variations in temperatures depending on your exact location. The Northern and Western Islands, including Grand Bahama Island, are a bit cooler than the rest. Hurricane season typically comes around from June through November and can lead to heavy rain and storms. However, most upscale buildings in the Bahamas are hurricane proof. There are two seasons in the Islands of the Bahamas, namely summer and winter.
Summer (May through September)
During the summer months, the average temperature is approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer days can be hot and humid, but the trade winds provide enough cooling for generally pleasant temperatures. Note that the summer season coincides with the rainy season (May through October), but rain mostly occurs as short afternoon showers immediately followed by sunshine.
While the busiest season in the Bahamas is during the winter months, note that Bahamas summers are wonderful, too. The sea around the islands is warm and calm and provides ideal conditions for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming. May is also an excellent month for fishing, especially for yellowfin tuna and marlin. Also note that lobster season begins in August, which is another argument for the Bahamian summer! Amberjack and grouper are around plenty between March and August.
Winter (October through April)
During the winter months, the average winter temperatures hover around a pleasant 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes the winter months the most popular time for Bahamas travel. Winters are drier and cooler than the summers with less rain.
November through March is wahoo season in the Bahamas! Yellowfin tuna start to bite in April, which is also one of the best months for Bahamas fishing in general. The moderate temperatures create perfect conditions for outdoor activities, while at the same time the ocean temperatures are still warm enough to engage in water sports.
Regardless of when you travel, you will find out that The Islands of the Bahamas offer great fun and magnificent vacation days regardless of season!
